New Article by TIDE Researchers in Development and Change on UNCTAD
TIDE Director Amir Lebdioui, and Post-Doctoral Researchers Tin Hinane El Kadi and Baptiste Albertone published a critical review of UNCTAD’s 2024 Trade and Development Report, questioning its departure from productive transformation as a central development strategy. The article argues that prioritising non-tradable services risks locking low- and middle-income countries into low-productivity trajectories with limited scope for structural change.

The authors also critique the report’s limited engagement with sustainability and its failure to address global power asymmetries shaping the international economic order. By revisiting these debates, the article contributes to renewed discussions on development strategy and the role of industrial policy in the Global South.
